The high valleys of Monte Lessini, which cross the provinces of Verona and Vicenza, constitute the extraordinary scenery, as yet uncontaminated and rich in biodiversity, of this “little big” denomination. Little, since the 450 hectares planted with Durella make this indigenous vine a real jewel in the limited yield it provides; big, because the quality of the Classical Method that derives from it places it among the highest peaks of the spumantes of excellent level in the whole country. The origins of this grape are very ancient, as are the volcanic traces that characterise the basalt soils in which these organoleptically original wines are born, marked by an acid, vibrant backbone which only the Durella vine, of all the varieties suited to Classical Method, can bring about.

Brenton is a territory in the district of Roncà, n the heart of the hilly area in the DOC Lessini Durello.The altitude is 300 m on sloping land with due south exposure. It has been under Tessari management since 2008 and from 2009 onwards it has supplied the grapes for the production of Amedeo, classical method reserve, the highest expression in the field of sparkling wines in the Tessari house. The vineyard is planted with Durella and Garganega grapes.

Durella

At Bolca, in the upper valley of the Alpone, the first fossils of ampelidee, vines, were found and are considered the ancestors of today’s vines. The name Durella seems to derive from the hardness of the grape and its resistance to alteration. It was believed at one time that Durello wine had magical medicinal properties. Thanks to its strong and slightly sour character, its mineral content and acidity, it was particularly resistant and for this reason could survive long journeys.

CHARACTERISTICS: the wine produced has fruity tangs of white mulberry and slightly of grapefruit, is moderately alcoholic, has excellent acidity and minerality conferred by the volcanic soils, rendering it especially suited for spumante.

PLANT: a vigorous vine, with regular, middle-range yield.

BUNCH: of average size, pyramidal, short, winged, compact.

GRAPE: medium sized, oval shaped with thick, tough skin coloured yellowish-green or golden, with a rich bloom.

SOIL: this plant prefers hilly terrain with clayey-limey soils.

RIPENING TIME: first ten days of October.

Climatic Trends

There are difficult years, some are dry, others are rainy. Then there is the soil to manage and look after. To know and follow the trends in the weather is an essential part of understanding how to act and work on the various vineyards, with the quality of the final result in mind. “Since January 2012 we have been equipped with three electronic stations that allow us to find out accurately the weather data necessary for adopting the crop protection system and to see the climatic characterisation of single years.” This was a necessary step, based on the awareness that climate variables affect the expressiveness and the quality of the wine. The data for each year involve the three zones over which the Tessari family’s vine-planted hectares are spread: Soave Classico, Valpolicella and Lessini Durello. These data guide our work every day and partly influence our agricultural choices.
